Restoring hope in Refugee Week

Michelle Morgan - Monday, June 16, 2014

Refugee Week is being celebrated in Australia from 15 to 21 June to raise awareness about the issues affecting refugees and to acknowledge the positive contributions made by refugees to Australian society.

This is the final year of the “Restoring Hope” theme which reminds us that while a refugee’s journey begins with danger, it also begins with hope.

On World Refugee Day - Friday June 20 - Refugee Week Ambassador, Sarah Blasko, will perform a special show in Redfern to raise funds for the Refugee Council of Australia, whose core funding has been completely cut in the latest Australian budget.

There are many books about refugees, written for children and young adults, which are listed on the following websites:

Teacher Resources for Refugee Week

Mitali's Fire Escape: Children's and YA Books about Refugees and Resettlement Camps

Worlds of Words: Refugee Experiences in Literature

Amazon: Children's Books about Refugees and Forced Displacement
