The winners of the Children's Book of the Year Awards 2014 have been announced:

Early Childhood - Jan Ormerod & Andrew Joyner - The Swap
Eve Pownall - Christopher Faille & Danny Snell - Jeremy
Younger Reader - Catherine Jinks - City of Orphans: a very unusual pursuit
Older Reader -  Fiona Wood - Wildlife
Picture Book -
Shaun Tan - Rules of Summer
Crichton Award - Graham Byrne (text: Claire Saxby) - Big Red Kangaroo

Children's Book Week has now officially commenced and continues until Friday 22 August with events and activities held in schools, libraries and book shops all across Australia. Connect to Reading - Reading to Connect is this year's theme, highlighting how books and reading help children connect with to each other. Through reading books, children enjoy the experience of exploring story, travelling to other worlds and connecting through a variety of media.


The awards celebrate the recently published books of many talented Australian authors and illustrators who write for children and young adults. Congratulations to all of the award winners, honour books and notables!

CBCA Book of the Year Awards Shortlist 2014

I had the pleasure of attending in Sydney today the announcement of the Shortlist for the Children's Book Council of Australia's Book of the Year Awards 2014.

Steven Herrick set the tone of the day with an engaging keynote address interspersed with readings from several of his books in verse. This was followed by lively panel discussions of the five main categories of books in the Awards:

Early Childhood, Younger Readers, Older Readers, Picture Books and the Eve Pownall Award for Information Books.

The Children's Book Week theme for 2014 was announced: Connect to Reading and the poster and other merchandise officially launched.

Congratulations to all the shortlisted authors, illustrators and publishers, as well as to all the Notable Books for 2014!

Review of "Racing the Moon" in All the Buzz about Books

There is a very complimentary review of Racing the Moon in the latest issue of All the Buzz about Books, published by the Children's Book Council of Australia (NSW Branch). Racing the Moon is described as 'a captivating historical narrative set in the Great Depression,' and the reviewer finishes by saying: 'Morgan has created a refreshingly frank and necessary narrative we must read and you are guaranteed not to be disappointed.'
