Walking on the East Coast of Tasmania

Michelle Morgan - Thursday, April 24, 2014

I just finished a four-day walk with my husband, Luke, and other walkers on the east coast of Tasmania. We started in the Mt William National Park, walking to Forester Beach Camp where we stayed on our first night before continuing down the coast, along several beautiful pristine beaches to the southern section of the Bay of Fires where we stayed in a lodge for the next two nights.

The Bay of Fires was named in 1773 by Captain Tobias Furneaux, an English navigator in Captain Cooks' second voyage expedition who saw many camp fires on the shore, which he believed was an indication that the country was densely populated. In fact, Tasmania was inhabited by many Aboriginal tribes at the time whose families, culture and traditions and culture were severely impacted and in many places, devastated by the settlers who subsequently came to live on the island.
